The Attack on Pearl Harbor
started at about 8 in the morning on December 7,1941. Hundreds of
Japanese Naval planes and Kamikaze bombers attacked the American
Naval Base in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Kamikaze bombers would drop
manned warheads called "Cherry Blossoms" and small torpedoes that
skipped across the surface to slam into the American ships. The brutal
attack lasted only 2 hours, but caused major damage and catastrophy.
By the end, the Japanese forces had sunk 20 American vessels , shot
down 200 American planes, and killed over 2,000 American soldiers
plus wounding over 1,000. The next day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt
and all of Congress declared war on Japan. Before Pearl Harbor, America
was not involved in WWII. The attack brought the U.S.A. into the war, and
we responded by siding with the allies.
Pearl Harbor was a large American Naval harbor in the land lock of Oahu,
Hawaii. It was large enough to hold many large warships in the dry dock and
contained a marine railway for smaller ships and patrol boats. It also included
a berthing area by the eastern side of Ford Island and was commonly known
as "Battleship Row". Ford Island dominated the main inland of the island, and
held a Naval Air Station for planes to refuel, rest and repair.
